The Guardhouse is prominent from many locations
Description
The Temple of the Sun dominates the right foreground. The Guardhouse and Machu Picchu Mountain stand out in this early morning light.
The window, seen here in the Temple of the Sun, has a celestial significance. The winter solstice sunrise passes through it for a solar alignment. (Abby and Nile traveled to Peru in June, 2002, the winter season, in part to photograph this event.)
Note the four carved stone pegs protuding at each corner of the window. Some researchers believe that strings were tied from corner to corner to create crosshairs for a more accurate shadow pattern on the carved ledge inside on the floor of the Temple.
