We traveled many miles by van and jeep over rough trails. Buffeted by strong icy winds, we were warmly dressed in our windbreakers and layered clothing. The scenes before us changed moment by moment with swirling clouds and shifting sunlight.

As Abby made notes while viewing the spectacular snow-covered Andes, I made this photograph from the window of the airplane. We flew from Santiago, Chile, to Punta Arenas, the southernmost town in Chile. The small town is a few miles from the Strait of Magellan. The body of water in the foreground of this photograph is Lake Nordenskjold, about 12 miles long and one and one-half miles wide.
