Tongariki

Description

Tongariki

In 1992 , a Japanese company, as an advertising venture, undertook the restoration of these 15 MOAI. It had been 36 years since the first fallen MOAI had been reerected under the direction of Thor Heyerdahl. This restoration at Tongariki by the Japanese was the most ambitious attempt up to this time and was the first to use computers, with each stone numbered.

The crane used in the reconstruction, brought from Japan, was the first ever on the island, and was donated to the islanders at the end of the project.
