Ancient Comets

Ancient Visitors to Desert Skies from Outer Space

LEFT IMAGE:

UNKNOWN COMET circa 1000 AD

This Jornada culture petroglyph which I photographed in the Mogollan region of Otero County, New Mexico, was created by a Native American about 1000 years ago. To me this drawing seems to represent a comet, and the squares may depict the number of days of visibility; however, any interpretation of ancient rock art in the Southwest is speculation, and open to question.

RIGHT IMAGE:

COMET HYAKUTAKE, March 26, 1996

I made this photograph a little after midnight within the city limits of Tucson, Arizona, about 300 miles from the site of a Native American petroglyph documented in the other photograph shown above.
